MY PRIORITIES TO MAKE BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR ALL, MAKE THINGS MORE AFFORDABLE      AND IMPROVE OUR QUALITY OF LIFE

MAKING MICHIGAN'S ECONOMY WORK FOR EVERYONE

Too many people in our state are living paycheck to paycheck and our trapped in a never ending cycle of simply surviving from day to day. If we want Michiganders to be able to imagine a better future for the next generation we must first get people from a mindset focused on simply surviving to one focused on thriving. To do this we must create an economy that works for all of us and not continue to prioritize the profits of millionaires and billionaires. Everyone deserves to live a life where they can work and meet all of the needs of their families. Here is how I believe we create an economy that works for all of us

Maximizing state benefits:

  • We should help residents transition off state benefits by fostering long-term economic independence. This includes:

    • Providing financial literacy and long-term planning classes.

    • Implementing gradual benefit phase-outs to avoid "cliffs" that discourage people from accepting higher-paying jobs.

Ensuring big corporations pay their workers fairly, not their Wall Street shareholders:

  • Large corporations should not shift the burden of low wages onto the state. We should increase taxes on companies whose employees require state assistance, incentivizing higher wages.

Investing in our workforce by supporting unions and collective bargaining rights:

  • Unions are the backbone of a healthy, strong, middle-class economy. From a four hour work week to healthcare to paid time off to take a vacation, the right to form a union and collectively bargain have afforded the working class so many of these rights we hold deard.

  • I want to ensure that Michigan never again becomes a Right-To-Work (For Less) State and that we make it easier for workers to join a union by removing barriers to unionization. I want the legislature to work with the Michigan Attorney General's office to crackdown on employers and billion dollar corporations like Amazon and Wal-Mart who intimidate and harass workers trying to unionize their workplace.

  • We must invest in our workforce here in Michigan so we can grow our homegrown talent, and attract more talent come and work here in Michigan.

  • Prioritize good paying jobs that provide benefits including things like access to healthcare, paid sick leave and paternity leave.

Supporting small businesses that are the backbones of our community:

  • As the backbone of our economy, small businesses need fewer regulations and a lower tax burden than multinational corporations to help them thrive.

Making sure that every parent can afford adequate childcare:

  • Parents often make the decision to go down to one income households rather than pay the high cost of forcing one parent to sacrifice career growth to ensure their kid gets the support they need. We must make it easier to start childcare facilities as this will increase competition and lower prices.

Ensuring that home is affordable and within reach for every family:

  • Freeze rent prices and establish a commission to align housing costs with regional wages.

  • Restrict corporate firms from buying single-family homes to stop them from driving up prices.

  • We must implement a state-wide right to counsel for low-income tenants in evictions cases

  • Establish a state-wide Right to Renew policy. Too often landlords will refuse to renew leases to make it easier for them to raise rent or simply charge their tenants a month-to-month rate and thus maximize their profits. The first right of refusal to renew a lease but sit with the tenants and not landlords.

Holding utility companies like Consumer Energy and DTE accountable:

  • We must stop constant rate hikes from DTE and Consumers Energy.

  • We must take back the power from appointing members to the board that approve DTE rate hikes from the Governor and place them with the legislature and thus in the hands of the people. Doing this would be able to help the people of Michigan clearly identify who stands with lowering the cost of our energy bills and who is against them.

ENSURING HEALTHCARE IS AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE

Michigan's healthcare system is failing because it prioritizes profits over people, making care a privilege rather than a right. We must be unapologetic in our fight to expand access to affordable, high-quality healthcare for all residents.

Addressing this crisis requires acknowledging that our current infrastructure is broken. Our  inefficient data systems create unnecessary bureaucracy and thus makes it difficult for residents to access the benefits the state provides.

I have spent the last three years working for a Reproductive Rights organization and my guiding principle for my work is pretty simple: the only people who should be involved in making healthcare decisions are the patient and their doctor. PERIOD! Insurance companies have no business deciding what access to care patients should be able to receive. Michigander deserve a healthcare system that works for them if you vote for I will support Representative Carrie Rheingan’s MI Care Bill would bring single-payer health care to Michigan guaranteeing healthcare access for all.

To improve Michigan's healthcare, we must:

  • We must fight to end the hold that insurance companies have on the healthcare industry. We can do this by prohibiting insurance companies from owning pharmacy managers and care delivery.

  • Expand mental healthcare and prevent insurers from denying medically necessary treatments

  • Eliminate the "in-network vs. out-of-network" system so patients can choose the best providers without financial penalty.

  • Protect and expand reproductive rights and ensure providers can offer care without legal threat.

  • Remove barriers from accessing abortion by allowing Medicaid to be used to pay for an abortion

  • Eliminate healthcare deserts by leveraging telehealth and mobile healthcare units.

IMPROVING OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS

  • We must fight Betsy Devos for profit agenda and push back against her agenda to take money away from our public schools.

  • Per pupil spending is not the end all be able to strengthen our public school systems. While yes we must increase our per pupil funding we must ensure we use the weighted funding formula to ensure that every public school receives equitable funding. This funding would help us continue to fund our free breakfast and lunch programs that so many Michigan families depend on.

  • This means ensuring that schools have enough intervention specialists to help kids struggling in school. I know first hand the work that these specialists play in ensuring kids make needed advancements in reading and math.

  • We must continue to invest in early childhood education, our preschool for all and our literacy programs to make sure every kid gets off to a great start
Increase funding for before- and after-school programs to reduce costs for parents.

  • We must maintain our commitment to programs like Community College for All and Michigan Reconnect. These initiatives are vital for retaining local talent and demonstrating our dedication to the long-term professional growth of every resident.

  • To address the shortage of skilled labor, we must strengthen partnerships with trade organizations. This will ensure students have a clear, accessible pathway to high-paying union jobs if they choose a career path outside of a traditional two or  four-year college.

KEEPING OUR AIR, LAND, AND WATER CLEAN AND SAFE

We are facing an opposition party that doesn't believe in climate change. This means that we can’t be timid in our protection of our environment and our great lakes, but we must be aggressive and proactive as we fight against a party that denies reality and the consensus that the vast majority of the scientific community has concluded.

Our nation's heavy reliance on oil and fossil fuels threatens the livability of our planet for future generations, demanding a rapid transition away from non-renewable resources. Michigan, the state that put the country on wheels, is can lead the world in green technology and the transition to clean renewable energy. Our dedication to deploying renewable resources to meet the state’s energy needs must match the historic commitment the nation displayed during the Space Race.

  • I am a no vote on Data Centers. We can’t sacrifice our environment and risk ecological destruction for short term economic growth. When we look to states like California and Nevada it becomes clear that access to affordable clean drinking water is not the infinite resource that we thought it was and when you combine that with a party who doesn’t even believe in climate change it becomes clear why I am apprehensive about giving data centers access to one of our greatest resources.

  • We must take clear and decisive action to ensure that companies don’t pollute and dump toxic materials in our most vulnerable communities driving up asthma rates in these areas.

  • If we are going to hold companies accountable we must strengthen our polluter pay laws NOW! Without strong polluter pay laws companies fill no strong obligation to fix the damage they have done to the community nor take care of those who were impacted by their negligence.

  • A pipeline only meant to run for 50 years has now been running for more than 70 years making Line 5 an environmental disaster waiting to happen. If an environmental disaster does strike Michigan won’t just lose access to clean water but our economy will suffer as one of our greatest tourist attractions will be at risk.

  • Michigan must continue to push forward in its lawsuit against Enbridge while also refusing to grant Enbridge the permits they need to build a tunnel for Line 5.

SECURING A FUTURE FOR EVERY CHILD IN MICHIGAN

Investing in youth is the best way to secure Michigan's future. While programs like Michigan Reconnect are a start, we must continue to inject investment into our schools to attract talent and businesses.I was a proud supporter of the Invest in MI Kids Ballot initiative because I knew that it would inject some much needed investment into our schools.

As a proud board member of the Michigan Center for Civic Education we must do more than just prepare our students for college or the workforce but we must help them be engaged residents of Michigan with an understanding of their civic duty.

CREATING A MORE FAIR AND EQUITABLE JUSTICE SYSTEM

While the Michigan legislature has made strides in reforming the criminal justice system, significant work remains. Michigan has some of the worst mandatory minimum sentences in the country. Our current sentencing guidelines are often inconsistent across counties, leading to unequal application of the law. While judicial discretion is vital, the current disparities in how Michiganders experience justice highlights a system in need of fundamental change. We must shift our focus from a purely punitive mindset toward a more holistic approach that prevents initial interaction with the system and prioritizes the reduction of recidivism.

Reforming our sentencing guidelines:

  • Eliminate maximum sentencing guidelines to allow judges more discretion to account for mitigating circumstances.

  • When we are evaluating sentences for non-violent crimes we should use both the severity of the crime as well as the person's criminal history when we are considering sentencing.

Implementing "Good Time" legislation:

  • Michigan is one of only six states without "good time" legislation. Implementing this would reduce the prison population and save taxpayers millions.

  • Our economy must be focused on creating a thriving Michigan focused on growth and driving investment into our state, but because of our lack of good time legislation we spend nearly 49K dollars per prisoner here in Michigan. If we had good time legislation and less prisoners in Michigan we would have no need to invest 2.1billion dollars into the Michigan Department of Correction budget.

Developing a jobs program to give people opportunity:

  • As someone who worked in the Michigan Senate during the peak of COVID-19 I saw first hand how our departments being understaffed impacted the unemployment system and the Department of Health and Humans services. Our state has a large number of vacancies in numerous departments. We can create a job program that trains individuals in our system to fill the vacancies that we have in these departments.

  • We can work with small businesses and give them tax breaks if they hire residents in our system who have completed a jobs training program.

Protecting Our Vulnerable Communities

  • Donald Trump's ICE Agents are acting as a paramilitary force, terrorizing residents in cities across the country. We must work to put and end to this now

  • We must end 287g agreements here in Michigan to prevent local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with ICE

  • We will fight to ensure that ICE can’t operate in protected places like churches, school, courthouses and hospitals

  • If we can’t ban ICE from operating in Michigan we will prevent them from wearing masks while carrying out their duties

  • Include language in our deeds that prevent any property sold to the federal government or private entity from using the facility as immigration detention centers
